A pleasurable sensation of light characterises the corporate headquarters of Unilever in the heart of the city of London – the construction project encompasses a whole range of technologies that simultaneously appeal to the senses.
Thanks to the interlayer laminated into the glass fins, all the colours in the spectrum of light are reflected and integrated in the west facade as part of the design. Halo-shaped glazing in the roof allows natural daylight to light up all of the nine floors down through to the base of the building thus creating a pleasant indoor environment, further contributed to by 25 operable vents in the roof , each of different geometry. Rooflights accessible to staff and visitors provide interesting and unusual perspectives. A glass showcase façade of panes sloping in various directions displays an exhibition space shaped like a crystal.
Particular attention, however, was paid to detail: the soffits and the fascia of the inner atrium glazing traversing all floors display an intricate design using GRP (glass fibre reinforced plastic) – a technology permitting the creation of almost any geometry. In addition, seele was responsible for the atrium and lift glazing, the inner and outer balustrades, as well as approximately 35 automatic doors.
